| We've been very happy with this humidifier. The cool mist is very fine, so it feels more "misty" and less "damp" or "rainy" than some other humidifiers we've tried. The controls over how much or little mist it produces are effective, and it's very quiet. Although this product is a little more expensive than some other types of humidifiers, it's worth it. I know several people whose babies have been burned by warm mist humdifiers, and they also tend to breed bacteria, neither of which is a concern with this product. Also although we originally bought a cheaper humidifier, it turned out not to be as inexpensive as we first thought because we kept having to replace the wick and it quickly broke. This humidifier doesn't have "hidden costs" and is sturdy and well made. Also if you take off the lid and watch what it does to produce the mist, it's really cool (not a reason to buy the product in itself, but interesting ....) |

| Our son gets asthma and croup from colds, so having a good humidifier was essential to keep his airway open. This was our third and final humidifier. After wasting our money on cheapo humidifiers that stopped working after a couple months, and that were awkward to fill and transport without spilling and to assemble correctly to get going, this humidifer worked like a charm. Sometimes there is a slight medicinal smell in the room in the morning, but it's not overwhelming, or that different from any other humidifier. We have had this humidifier for two years now and with proper maintenance it still runs like the day we bought it. |

| I've had mine for a few months now and have used it for my kids very bad colds and also they both had RSV in November and had to use it for that as well. It's quiet, you wouldn't know it was on. You can adjust the direction it sprays. The water lasts all night long and for one nap the next day. I wash once a week like the directions say. It's also neat looking, not hospital like :) We're thinking of buying one for our own bedroom w/ all this dry weather! |

| We have had Vicks Ultrasonic Humidifier by Kaz for about 14 months and have had no problems at all. The surrounding area does not get damp which is a problem we had with other products. One aspect of this product we admired was its longevity; our second humidifier lasted only 2 months. Finally it easily dispenses mist for the entire night and late into the following morning. |

| We've been using the humidifier for 2 years now (on the same cartridge) and it's still going strong! This is our first humidifier so I don't have anything to compare it to, but my friend had one (don't know the brand) with a nightlight on it and it barely put out any moisture when her son had croup. I ran this one over and she fell in love with it and bought one the next day! Yes, there is a smell in the room after a night of being used with the door closed, but I just assumed it was from the dampness. All in all, I love my humidifier! |

I purchased this humidifier for my baby, however used it for myself first. I was worried, remembering the humidifiers from when I was a kid, that made a lot of noise, dampened any area within 5 feet of the machine and spilled out easily if the machine was bumped or while taking it to refill, not mention the moldy smell.
This machine was so simple to use, attractive and best of all quiet and efficient. The gentle sound was actually soothing to fall asleep to. The mist was strong enough to help my stuffy nose, but never got the carpet or anything near it wet. I woke up relieved, well rested and extremely pleased!! I am also happy that I tried it out myself and feel very confident putting it in my baby's room. |

I sent an email to Vicks about the coupons that I found in the humidifier I bought for my dd. I was excited when I found coupons in the box, but less than excited to see that they expired a month before the baby was born!
So after emailing Vicks, they told me that another company called Kaz actually produced it for them and I needed to contact them directly about getting replacement coupons.
Well, needless to say just a couple weeks went by and amazingly, there were coupons for Vicks products in my mailbox! :D
By the way, I LOVE the Vicks Ultrasonic (Cool Mist) Humidifier, Model V5100N!!!!!! I had the Evenflo (hot) Humidifier and it did not put out near as much steam and was a burn risk to boot!!! |

| We have used many humidifiers over the years. This one is highly recommended. It is easy to use and very easy to clean. The device emits a nice amount of humidity - we have one in each bedroom. It doesn't get smelly (as long as you keep it clean!) and doesn't make too much noise. It also seems to be pretty energy efficient, as far as humidifiers go. |

| After endless reviews of humidifiers, i chose this one. Actually, i was getting quite frustrated and bought this one, feeling like they all stick and nothing is going to make me happy anyways. well, i was wrong. i chose this mid-price model and definitely got my moneys worth. i have been using it less than a month, but am very happy. it holds a gallon, but i use the mid-setting and the gallon lasts me two nights, plus a little extra. i found if i left it on the highest setting, the mist settled on my floor because i keep the room temperature too cold(which i need to sleep!)But even at the highest setting, it is very quiet. it has never leaked either. the only downfall is there is no automatic shut off. but for me, it doesnt matter. even after 2 nights(9-10 hours) there is some water in the reserve so i shut it off when i wake up. great buy in my opinion! |

| We tried 3 humidifiers for our baby, and this was the best. It's quiet, and the tank is big. You can get two night's use out of a single filling. I also like being able to control the amount and direction of the water vapor. The only downside is having to clean the tank and base on a regular basis (a small price to pay when your baby has cold). |
1st impression: Highly pleased; 2nd impression; hate it! PS: I rate it only 1 star; not 4!

I had a succession of ultrasonic humidifiers from Sharper Image over the years which were fabulous for conditioning a dry room for a singer. However, there were always two big drawbacks: (1) they'd leave white dust everywhere unless you used distilled water in them; and (2) if you let them run after the water emptied, it'd burn out the fan and then the unit would have to be replaced.
However, ultrasonics are so much better for the voice than standard cool or warm humidifiers, so when Sharper Image recently stopped making this, I looked elsewhere and found the model above from Vicks. Since I know to use only distilled water, the dust thing isn't an issue. My initial impression was one of being very impressed by the significantly greater volume of cool mist it pushed out, and it did so essentially silently. Also it has a far greater storage capacity than the old Sharper Image model, so it needn't be refilled as often.
That idyllic image lasted for my first two hours of use. Then I turned it off to go to lunch. When I turned it back on an hour later, surprise, surprise, no mist would come out. It just plain DIED! I then called the 800 number (which was staffed by some people who had absolutely no - I mean ZERO - prior familiarity with the product), and the only tip I got was from their voice mail which said to unplug the unit for one hour so it could "re-set" itself. I did so, but after replugging it, still no luck.
Can't ANYONE make one of these that is reliable? Vicks sure hasn't. |

I've been using this humidifier for more than a year now, and have been very happy with it. It's very quiet for the baby's room, and I haven't had a problem with the white dust, although it's not on 24-7.
Advice: be sure to empty and refill the tank and base daily if possible to keep the filter in good shape. And don't leave the water standing in it while you're on vacation- it's nearly impossible to hand scrub the tank- had to buy a flexible bottle brush for that one, lol.
I recently needed to replace the water tank (I dropped it and cracked it slightly). I was a little disappointed that they don't offer replacement parts for it. I'll search for a used one so I can keep using it. I am able to find filters for it pretty easily at the place of purchase- Meijer (a Michigan chain).
If I can't find a replacement tank, I will probably by a new one just like it. |

| I was reluctant to spend this much money on a humidifier, but it has been well worth it. This product works great. It is quiet and it's easy to fill up. The only feature it is missing is automatic shutoff. CVS.com does sell this model for $10 cheaper so if you print that out from their website and take it into the Babies R Us store, they'll match the price. |

| We've been very satisfied with this humidifier by Kaz and it has been working twelve hours a day for months now, lots of mist and absolutely no smell. If you have hard water in your area, replacement demineralization cartridges (Kaz DC-51) are a must or you can opt to use distilled water instead. Happily, the replacement cartridges are also available at Amazon and most drug stores. |

We purchased this for a 7-month old baby's room that is often very dry. Have owned a Holmes cold-mist humidifier in the past, but were looking for something quieter. We have had this for about 3 weeks, and it is working very well - quiet, the mist stream and nozzle set up is nice, let you point the visible mist away from walls. Best thing is that it IS much quieter than the cold-mist humidifiers we have tried/used in the past.
One short-coming: no humidistat, so we have to manually turn it off - this is a bit of a pain late at night. |

IT IS VERY QUIET AND CAN HARDLY HEAR IT, BUT THE MIST COMING OUT STINKS LIKE A PIG FARM! IT HAS SMELLED THIS WAY SINCE THE FIRST NIGHT WE USED IT. WE HAVE BEEN WAITING TO SEE IF IT WOULD GO AWAY AFTER SOME USE-MAYBE A NEW PLASTIC SMELL. IT HAS BEEN 2 WEEKS AND IT STILL SMELLS. WE WILL RETURN IT TODAY. | Good output of cool mist, but daily upkeep, filter changes, is a pain. It gets stinky if you don't change the filter frequently. Also, the instructions say not to leave the unit running while empty--so why didn't the manufacturer make it shut off automatically, as other models do??? Overall, I prefer the Honeywell warm mist humidifiers with built in humidistat--easier to maintain, auto shut off. |

| (1) Bought this humidifier advertised as "silent." Silent to me means that it doesn't make noise, and not having owned a humidifier before that's what I expected. It's not LOUD but it makes noise. (2) Covered every single thing in my room with white dust the first day. Gross. (3) Gets really dirty inside the unit and you have to clean it. (4) It BROKE! Stopped working suddenly, no power at all after 10 months. Kaz will replace it but I have to ship the whole mess myself which will probably cost a pretty penny, and the replacement won't arrive for 4-6 weeks. (5) I will be looking for a different model. |

| As devotees of ultrasonic humidifiers, we snapped up 3 of these units to compete with the forced-air heat. There is a lot to like: large capacity tank, very quiet, fine mist. Unfortunately, I think there is some type of engineering problem with either the ultrasonic transducer or the water-level sensing circuit. We have sent two back for replacement, because they simply quit working -- regardless of the cleaning and demineralizing routine. One replacement failed after two uses. One of the remaining three is now becoming erratic, and the ultrasonic transducer is delaminating. The water demineralizing cartridges are a great idea, and work pretty well, but be aware that they don't prevent all of the mineral dust. Still, use them. So in short, these units are a great idea, but they need some better ruggedizing. My Holmes ultrasonic is 10 years old and still runs fine. You're lucky to get 10 months from these. |

| I recently purchased 2 Vicks Ultrasonic Humidifiers in Jan 2006 and received them by the 3rd week of Jan 06. On 2 Feb 06 (having used them only 2 weeks) one of them stopped putting out the humidifying vapor. I followed the manual's instructions to the letter by cleaning the tank with bleach and the base I used vinegar to clean what white dust (if any since I'm using the cartridge)it might have. Having followed the manual instructions to the letter, the humidifier turns on but there is no mist coming out of the mist nozzle. I plan in contacting the manufacturer for a replacement or refund. Good luck to those of you who are considering in purchasing a Vicks Ultrasonic Humidifier! |

Not so great for tracheostomy use

| Reviewer: James Tee, San Diego, CA USA |
| This Vicks ultrasonic humidifier was thoroughly recommended by everyone when we needed a humidifer with the possible hose attachment that goes to a mask around my dad's new tracheostomy. Problem is, it puts out TOO much mist even at the lowest setting! We've tried everything including taping the hole, but it then goes from 'all' to 'nothing' because the small hole desired quickly coalesces water preventing steam from passing through. Of course it wasn't until we started mentioning it to the various RN's that come to take care of my dad that 'everyone' using it for the same purpose complains of the same excessive mist problem. So... I've resorted to making large hole cuts in the plastic tubing leading up to my dad's mask. Not a great way to do it (and just asking to be seeded by bacteria), but if anyone has a better suggestion, I'm all for it, even if it means suggesting a different humidifier... |

The unit was also louder (especially when the water tank was low), than my Douglas ultrasonic humidifier (that still works after about 10 years). I use Reverse Osmosis water in the humidifier, so the white mineral dust is not a problem for me. I will try the Venta Sonic next. |

| This product must have some sort of defect. I am on my third Kaz humidifier this winter so far. This one in particular is better than the other two--I have also had two of the personal-sized units, do not even bother with those--but it is a hassle to use, the cartridges are not available anywhere at the moment to buy and the air it blows has a strage odor to it. The only good thing I can say about this company is that they are pretty good with customer service. I have sent two units back to them that they have replaced after I paid for shipping and they cast several rude comments my way suggesting that I was the one who was operating it incorrectly. Go with another company. Holmes makes a much better product. |

Chemical Pneumonia

I also posted this review on the product page for this humidifier direct from Amazon.com.
My wife and I bought this humidifier when she was about 8 months pregnant. She badly needed humid air to breath at night, but she couldn't abide too much noise. We tried three or four humidifiers before we landed on the Vicks Ultrasonic. After following the setup instructions, soaking the filter, and filling the unit with filtered (but not distilled) water, I turned it on about an hour before bedtime. We were pleased with the low-level, broadband hum the unit made and were initially quite pleased. Off we went to sleep.
We awoke about 4 hours later in a room that looked like it was full of smoke. We actually thought the apartment was on fire. A quick check of the place, though, revealed that all of the "smoke" was only in our bedroom. My wife's voice was rough and gravelly -- it was like she had something in her throat that she couldn't clear. She also had sharp pains in her lungs when she breathed. I had the same symptoms, but less severe, with a "frog in my throat" and pain in my chest only when I breathed deeply.
I evacuated her to the other bedroom and put a wet towel under the door. The fog had swept out of our bedroom and into the remainder of the apartment as soon as we opened the door. It took an hour to vent the apartment by opening every window and cranking the blower on the heat (it was mid-February).
An inspection the next morning quickly revealed that the humidifier was to blame. It and the rest of the room were blanketed in a layer of super-fine "white dust," with the largest build-up on and immediately around the humidifier. It turns out "white dust" is somewhat common with "ultrasonic" or "ultrasonic impeller" humidifiers (google it). Our doctor prescribed "clean air" and albuterol inhalers to treat what our "chemical pneumonia" (aggravation of the lungs by a chemical agent and not a bacterium). It took two weeks for my wife's voice and lungs to return to normal.
Needless to say, we have not used this unit since, nor will we ever experiment with an ultrasonic impeller (tip-off: a humidifier that uses a demineralization filter and not a wicking filter) humidifier again. |
