The quietest and best humidifier I've ever own!!

    Review Date: October 1, 2007
    Reviewer: tampa mom,
I have had an older model for probably 7 years and was just looking to see if I could another one. I remember when I bought it I had a problem getting it to work. It's water sensor can be touchy. I took it back and got a new one. I have had absolutely no problem with it in seven years! It is still working to this day. I have a small crack in the Water Tank but it is not leaking yet. It runs so quiet and humidifies the air nicely. When the kids are sick I lug it from room to room because the other three humifiers I have stuck under my bathroom sink are loud and do not put out as much mist. I don't use the Demineralization Cartridge, but I do use distilled water or softened water. I don't have any white dust. Jackie
    Definately worth the money!

I purchased this humidifier several years ago and only use it during the winter. It works perfectly as long as it is cleaned out every week as the manual says. And each year I bought another blue filter. Unfortunately, their is some kind of buildup in the tank so I am not sure if I should use it next winter. I would highly recommend it over any of the others.
    Works great!

I have two of these for use in the kid's rooms during winter. They put out plenty of moisture and have worked well for three years.

Cleaning is required but doesn't take long. Some have reported that they stop working which did happen with mine but it was easily fixed by cleaning the base and the water probe with white vinegar.

They are NOT silent but the noise is similar to a 'white' noise generator.
    The Best Humidifier

    Reviewer: J. Pelcic,
I have tried a number of different types of humidifiers, and this one is by far the best. It is the quietest humidifier I have used, and on its highest setting it can humidify a large room with no problem. The only drawback to this product is that the water sensor (found on newer models) must be cleaned every couple of days. I have very hard water and it has a tendency to build up scale on the sensor. If the buildup is too great the unit shuts off. Like all humidifiers, there is the potential for white dust, so unless you have very soft water you need to use the filter cartridge.

I do need to recommend that everyone read the instructions first. If you look the the negative reviews on this site, you will find a number of people who refused to read the instructions before operating and then chose to blame the unit for problems that occurred.
    BEST HUMIDIFIER

This Vick's Ultrasonic V5100 humidifier is the BEST! Cold steam is reportedly best for combating colds and allergies. The Vick's Ultrasonic V5100 humidifier is very quiet-no noise, it uses regular tap water, running it for nine hours uses half the tank so you don't have to worry about running out of water while you sleep. Water is added by twisting open the tightly-fitted, grooved stopper at the bottom of the tank. The stopper lifts off a large, 5 inch diameter openning for adding water and easy cleaning. The cold steam pours in a strong, steady stream from a semi-circular, 2 inch diameter disk that rotates to any position in the room.

After reading several reviews of humidifiers that all gave mixed opinions I ignored all of them and picked up this humidifier at a local drug store for $32. This humidifier is small, approximately 11"Wx6"Dx13"H, making it suitable to put on the floor or on a counter. It consists of two main parts, a white plastic base and a clear blue plastic container. The base has two sliding switches. One turns the unit on/off and the other adjusts the amount of water vapor being released in to the air. The blue container sits on top of the base and has a handle on top and a round screw-on part on the bottom to fill the container. It also comes with a filter that goes in the base. There is a round piece on top of the container that turns to adjust and direct the stream of water vapor. Pros: 1. In my opinion it is quiet, much quieter than the Bemis wicking humidifier I previously had. The sound level is comparable to a table top fan. It does make water noises though which I find soothing but could be an annoyance. 2. It runs for a long time without refilling. On the lowest setting 1 container full of water will last a couple days of continous run time. On the highest setting, it needs to be refilled once a day. 3. It has no wick, which would start to smell in the old humidifier I had. 4. No chemicals need to be added to keep scum from growing in it. 5. You can see the water vapor being released in to the air (so you know its working). 6. See through container. You don't have to open anything to see how much water is left. 7. Container fits in kitchen sink to be refilled. 8. Relatively easy to clean. Cons: 1. It has no automatic shut off when the water runs out or when the air has reached the desired humidity. 2. When the container is picked up to be refilled it drips so you need a towel with you. When the unit is running, the water empties out of the container into the base where it is turned into water vapor. So when you remove the container the base is still full of water. 3. It needs to be cleaned regularly, once a week at least unless you don't mind the scum that grows on it. The base has corners that you need a Q-tip to clean. It is recommended that it be cleaned with a damp cloth and a bleach and water solution and then rinsed well. We have extremely soft water so I don't know how long the filter that comes with the humidifier will last or how well it works in places with hard water. I would recommend this humidifier.
    Great for us!

I don't know much about humidifiers and need ours only when my 1 1/2 yo is congested (otherwise "not daily") and this has been great. We had a hand-me-down from family and it was really loud and didn't seem to do much to help my son. When I went shopping for a new machine this was a bit more expensive than I wanted however it was well worth it in the end. We have had no problems with it for our use and I just bought another for my cousin to use with her baby.
What do you expect for the price?

    Reviewer: E. Godfrey, Eastish...
We bought this product to help with dry throats in the wintertime and with nightly use have been waking up in a far more agreeable state. Our hygrometer doesn't really go up at all, but the difference with my throat is undeniable.

There are a few issues I have with this. 1.) The first is that is really isn't all that quiet. I have been sleeping fine with it on but it is far from a whisper. Also, the fan runs at full bore and any adjustment of the intensity only adjusts how dense the vapor is when it comes out. 2.) There is also a glowing green light to let you know that it is on, if the whirring noise and vapor spewing out didn't let you onto this. This just adds another intense light to your bedroom or wherever. 3.) You need to use distilled water in this or a white dust will accumulate everywhere. Also, a direct whiff of vapor revealed a strong mineral calcium smell. After a solid day of running, our 1,000 square feet looked smoky and dull, like a fog had rolled in. After switching to filtered water from a pitcher, things have gotten much better. 4.) Filling the thing is odd. You have to pluck out the blue water container, flip it over and twist off the lid. Why can't this be on the top? This just seemed odd. I'm a fan of "form follows function," so what's the function of having to flip the thing upside-down?

Overall, after figuring out the filtering issue, I'm pretty happy with this thing, but I can foresee others being upset with some of the features. Do your research, figure out exactly what you need and what you are willing to spend and you may find yourself coming back to this model.

Oh, and just so you know, this is a sonic humidifier. It uses sound to atomize the water... and everything else in the water! Keep this in mind before purchasing. Would you rather have your minerals in the air, or crusted onto some heating element or the like?
    Great product

I bought this product despite mixed reviews, I have used it for several months and I like it. A full tank of water does last more than eight hours on high despite one review I read. I also don't think its noisy as one reviewer remarked. You can hear it steaming and gurgling a bit but that's it. I do clean it out regularly so maybe that makes a difference. Its simple to refill, easy to handle, easy to break down and put back together during routine cleaning, and best of all its not terribly bulky. When you turn it on the knob glows green so if you aren't into having a night light you might not want this particular model.

First one I received had a noise problem, the manufacturer was VERY responsive and sent me a replacement almost immediately. This one works very well, pretty much as advertised. the only thing I would change is the method of filling the tank, it fills from the bottom, and there is no easy way to hold the tank, which has no provision for setting on a counter and no handle that can be used when filling.
    Good...not 100% silent

    Reviewer: Andrew B. Mallon,
I bought this one after the previous model burned out after five years of constant daily use each winter which is fair enough. This has essentially the same quality & features but does have a bit of noise which the older model didn't. Also, I had to turn down the mist control about half way or the room filled with white mist. Besides this, I would recommend this unit but make sure to clean it regularly as directed!
    Good product...

Use distilled water when possible, filter dirties up very quickly. Otherwise, runs very quietly, no complaints as of yet.

We're on day three of using this machine, and thanks to a weather monitor, we've witnessed the indoor humidity actually dropping while using it. I have a hard time believing this is happening; a fine mist is being emitted and the water level is going down. Also my husband has complained about waking up with a sore throat for the last two days.

On day two I also noticed that the white plastic top is cracking as if it was dropped. It have been damaged in shipping, since the box was quite mangled. Still, it troubles me.

I do agree that it's very quiet. A small whirring of a fan is really the only noise.

Setup was straightforward and simple, which is good since the manual is useless.

Regarding "white dust," we are fortunate to have a whole-house water filter, a water softener, and on top of that filtered drinking water, so we have not yet noticed any dust due to mineral content.

I did a great deal of research and I'm under the impression that the cool mist ultrasonic models are the best choices for both cleanliness and health reasons (kitty has asthma). Whether this one is as good as others on the market, I can't say. I will probably return it due to the cracking plastic - this does not affect operation - but I may or may not buy another of the same model. In the meantime, back to the drawing board...
OK, not great. Not silent, either.

    (1) Bought this humidifier advertised as "silent." Silent to me means that it doesn't make noise, and not having owned a humidifier before that's what I expected. It's not LOUD but it makes noise. (2) Covered every single thing in my room with white dust the first day. Gross. (3) Gets really dirty inside the unit and you have to clean it. (4) It BROKE! Stopped working suddenly, no power at all after 10 months. Kaz will replace it but I have to ship the whole mess myself which will probably cost a pretty penny, and the replacement won't arrive for 4-6 weeks. (5) I will be looking for a different model.
Advertising is false... there's no way this thing is "silent".

    Reviewer: L. Wixson,
I bought this (at a Target store) largely because of the claim on the box that said "Silent operation, won't disturb sleep". I guess it all depends on what they mean by "operation". It's true that there is no water gurgling, but there is a constant low whirring (like a fan) that is far from silent.
Good Humidifier but too much white dust

I just bought this for my bedroom and used it once and will be returning it. I thought it was quiet enough and did a good job putting moisture into the air - but in the morning anything plastic in the room was covered in white dust - a LOT of it. The humidifier itself was covered, front and back, and the back of a chair that was all the way across the room. I'm sure dust must have been other places too, but it only showed up on the plastic surfaces. The filter was in and I had waited the 15 minutes for it to soak before turning it on. I don't want to have to buy gallons of distilled water every day, so it's going back.

Maybe the water in my area is just too hard, but I bought the Crane's penguin humidifier for my son's room and it works much better - plenty of moisture, low noise, and no dust. Also cheaper. I recommend it.
    Works Great!!!....dies fast too!

This unit does a very good job, anad is easy to use and maintain, however it just stops working after 2 months or so. I've gone thru 5 of these units in the past 2 years, and we only use it during night time, when the heat is on. Not for long term buy.
    Works great.....when it works!

I've gone through 3 of these. They work great for the first few months as a previous reviewer stated but then they suddenly stop working. I cleaned it and changed the filters as necessary. I was quite happy with it up until the day it stopped working. There seems to be no reason why either. I returned one to the store that had stopped working and purchased a 2nd one at that time. But now both units have stopped working. So, 3 units that fail is enough for me to find another product!

When I was comparison-shopping on Amazon's site, the product pictured was last year's model, which is what I intended to purchase. I even paid a little more for it--imagine my surprise when I got this one instead! Its capacity is smaller than the previous model, and the motor is very noisy--it makes a constant, high-pitched whine. The handle is weirdly placed and makes the tank much more difficult to pick up once it's been filled. It does do the job of emptying the water mistily into your room, however. But I was disappointed to receive this newer model and not what I had ordered!
    Quiet?

Although described as "silent," I found it far from so. I'm returning it because the constant whine is driving me crazy. Also seems that water that goes through the demineralization cartridge turns brown.

We bought 4 of these in less than a year and the same thing keeps happening. After about 2.5 months it puts out about half of what it once did and simply goes south from there. I called and got the same insturctions read to me that were in the handbook.... the vinegar thing.,.... sometimes it helped for a night or two... but no more....
How does the government continue to let companies sell defective product...... I gave it two stars because when it is new it can get our rooms over 60% humidity.
    I wouldnt buy any more...You shouldn't either...

Purchased this humidifier approx 1 and half years ago, only used it in winter months, changed water, cleaned base and sensor with Qtip and replaced filter religiously, the machine no longer outputs the cool mist, it stays on and does nothing. When I called the company they recommended that I soak the sensor with white vinegar for 20 mins; tried that and still does not work. I recommend you do not buy this, its very unreliable.

It worked great for about 3 months. Then the unit simply quits. We cleaned it every day and only used it for nights. We even changed the filter every month and followed the "wait time" after filling to start it. It should have lasted for quite a while. Nope--just when it's past the 90-day return policy, it dies.

It is quiet and does a good job putting moisture in the air, but it's terrible as a long term solution.

P.S. Hope you like white "dust" all over everything in your house--that's another drawback. Not sure if all "cool mist" humidifiers are like that or not.
    Chemical Pneumonia

    Review Date: May 26, 2009
    Reviewer: J. D. Moore,
My wife and I bought this humidifier when she was about 8 months pregnant. She badly needed humid air to breath at night, but she couldn't abide too much noise. We tried three or four humidifiers before we landed on the Vicks Ultrasonic. After following the setup instructions, soaking the filter, and filling the unit with filtered (but not distilled) water, I turned it on about an hour before bedtime. We were pleased with the low-level, broadband hum the unit made and were initially quite pleased. Off we went to sleep.

We awoke about 4 hours later in a room that looked like it was full of smoke. We actually thought the apartment was on fire. A quick check of the place, though, revealed that all of the "smoke" was only in our bedroom. My wife's voice was rough and gravelly -- it was like she had something in her throat that she couldn't clear. She also had sharp pains in her lungs when she breathed. I had the same symptoms, but less severe, with a "frog in my throat" and pain in my chest only when I breathed deeply.

I evacuated her to the other bedroom and put a wet towel under the door. The fog had swept out of our bedroom and into the remainder of the apartment as soon as we opened the door. It took an hour to vent the apartment by opening every window and cranking the blower on the heat (it was mid-February).

An inspection the next morning quickly revealed that the humidifier was to blame. It and the rest of the room were blanketed in a layer of super-fine "white dust," with the largest build-up on and immediately around the humidifier. It turns out "white dust" is somewhat common with "ultrasonic" or "ultrasonic impeller" humidifiers (google it). Our doctor prescribed "clean air" and albuterol inhalers to treat what our "chemical pneumonia" (aggravation of the lungs by a chemical agent and not a bacterium). It took two weeks for my wife's voice and lungs to return to normal.

Needless to say, we have not used this unit since, nor will we ever experiment with an ultrasonic impeller (look for a humidifier that uses a demineralization filter and not a wicking filter) humidifier again.
    Scary!!!!

We bought this model humidifier after researching several on the market. We have had it for almost two months with routine cleanings and using purified water in the unit. No problem- very quiet. Then, we changed the filter and followed the installation directions- At 2am, my husband heard my 11 week old coughing- Upon going to check on her- her room was filled with a foul smelling smoke and the humidifier was making an awful noise. After turning it off, the water in the base was a yellowish color and white dust was every where. Needless to say this product is going back.

This product will likely need to be pulled from the market. After using this humidifier everything in my apartment is covered with a white film. Considering that this vaporized dust coming from the humidifier is everywhere, it's likely in your lungs too. This unit is going in the trash.

We bought this and it only lasted a few months before it broke. It also let out a lot of wet moisture so i always made sure to place a waterfroof baby mattress pad underneath to protect surfaces under and around it. We have since bought a different one. I would not by this brand again.

There was so much "WHIT DUST" using this for the first time that you could not see my babies crib!! We followed instructions carefully and were using bottled distilled water. We went to the store we purchased it, got a new one and did an experiment in our basement-- THE SAME THING HAPPEND! This happend 7 weeks ago and it has been a night mare...my perfectly healthy baby has undergone CT SCANs, X-rays, bronchioscopes needing general anesthesia, inhalers, prednisone, lasix---- all to try to make him better. Pulmonologist are stumped at what to do. THIS IS A SCARY PRODUCT----I CALLED THE -1800 number on the box and the women says they will not recall a product over a phone call!!! SCARY!!!!!!!!!!!!
