Quiet, easy to use, and so gosh darn CUTE!

I got the penguin humidifier a week ago after researching multiple brands, some expensive ones, filter ones, big ones, warm ones, etc. And I read the reviews about it leaking or breaking on this one, and essentially there was some complaint on just about every brand out there--always a few problems. So for the $30 this one cost (and the fact that it is ridiculously adorable!) it seemed to cover what I needed: something that was not expensive, not too large and bulky, smaller reservoir so more fresh water going through it (and less water sitting around getting ookey) and would add humidity where ever it was.

It has been running almost non-stop for a week, minus filling times or when we were out, and has worked perfectly. The body reservoir, even when running on high, has lasted at least 16 hours. I haven't had problems with white dust on everything like my old-fashioned gigantic noisy one (I use tap water), and it doesn't spray water drops out with the mist either. It definitely made a difference running at night in the bedroom--no noses and throats feeling 'dry as dust' in the AM. The penguin has a small footprint, about 9" diameter and 12.75" tall. It runs almost silently BUT it does make a trickling noise and actually sounds like our tabletop fountain. It's a nice sound during the day but wore on me during the night; I wasn't used the sound and I kept thinking it's leaking when it wasn't. So now I run it for a while before bed and I sleep much better all around.

Things to watch out for though... the reservoir opening where you fill it, there is a screw-on cap with a spring-valve (like what's at the bottom of your coffee maker basket). There should be a silicone O-ring that fits in the top of the cap. Our O-ring was inside the opening, and since it was clear-ish could be easily missed. The O-ring could cause the cap to leak if not seated properly and the cap needs to be tightened snuggly. When filled and righted (there's even a little handle to carry it by) it should only drip slightly out of the spring-valve. Check that nothing is clogging the spring-valve by pressing it in (before filling) and that the flap is not folded. Only use COLD water in the reservoir, and if you boiled water WAIT for it to be room temp before using. Using hot water could definitely cause this plastic to crackle and crack. The body must sit squarely on the 'butt' or it can dribble over the side a tiny bit.

We have had absolutely no problems with this little cutie, and if I do I'll update my posting. It has a nice rocker on-off switch on his 'left butt cheek'. It has a dial on the front (I'll call it his bellybutton) to adjust the amount of mist; even on high he doesn't drip. The mist dial doesn't seem to affect the fountain noise at all; i.e. the lesser misting does not lessen any gurgling it does. A great little design and it does the job!
quiet, efficient and cute!

This frog humidifier is wonderful. I'm so glad I finally decided to get one after reading reviews on it since last winter. Unlike this picture, the actual product is a true Granny Smith apple green, or some might call it lime green.

PROS
-quiet
-no expensive filter required. (my Holmes humidifier requires a new $13 filter about every 6 weeks)
-shuts off automatically when it runs out of water
-easy to refil water
-simple and easy to use
-cute!

CONS
-tiny green light is on when humidifier is in use and I persoanlly like a very dark bedroom at night. I just tape a dark piece of paper over it and problem solved. But it can also be a night light for a child's room.
-must be on a nightstand or some sort of elevated surface. Some people might not have that room to spare.
-it may be TOO cute and irresitible for little ones to keep their hands off it at first. But the newness wears off.
Really quiet, really cute - worth the money

I bought the cow, the penguin and the elephant. The penguin is the best at disbursing the mist. The cow is the hardest to figure - the mist comes out of its ears. The elephant trunk is good but it's a smaller opening than the penguin's mouth. All three are very quiet and have a large range of mist options. None require a filter which is GREAT but I add a humidifier water cleaner to keep them from getting that pink slime that's gross and moldy. My girls LOVE these humidifiers and, assuming the motors hold up well, I'd get any of them again. VERY good price performers compared with some others I've purchased.

We read a lot of the reviews before deciding to buy the Crane Penguin. Some of the lower stars almost deterred us from buying it, but we tried it anyways because it's so cute. And we're happy we did.

For all those who complained about it (white dust, hard to clean, loud noise, the handle breaks, etc.) I've got one thing to say:---- READ THE MANUAL, PEOPLE. ---- All of those issues are spoken about with the included documentation and how to avoid or minimize them.

For example, the white dust has nothing to do with the humidifier. It's the minerals that your local water company puts in the water system. The documentation tells you specifically "filtered or distilled water is recommended to avoid white dust if your tap water is too hard." Or you can buy an optional filter for the unit. But you would get the white dust with ANY humidifier without a filter. We happen to not have hard tap water, so depending on your area, it may not even be a problem.

Also, there is a section on general maintenance and cleaning. To keep the inside of the tank clean, it explains first, don't let water sit in the tank for more than two days while bacteria can build up. That's just common sense. Secondly, just add a few drops of household bleach to the water every fourth time you fill it. But even if the tank does start to have noticeable mineral deposits or bacteria, it gives simple instructions to use a teaspoon of bleach with a gallon of water, swish it around for a while, then dump it. What's so hard about that?

I won't go into everything else because you can just read the instructions for yourself if you buy it. But my point is that you should not be dissuaded from buying this humidifier because of some other comments. It's been wonderful for us and it does it's job.
Cute, quiet and easy to clean!

We have had this product for 2 years and love it! It generates a little (not a lot) of white noise - which you may/may not prefer, but we think is a plus. The mist comes out of the holes over the eyeballs, so it goes straight up in the air to fill the room. You use the knob to control the rate - the instructions say to turn it on high and then turn back until it only goes up instead of down to make sure you get the right amount. We run only at night and refill every 2-3 days. It is filter-less, and is the easiest humidifier I've ever cleaned! I do recommend the additional blue purifier; it screws in where the cap goes, so very easy. And for those wondering, our toddler knows it's a frog, but he doesn't play with it like we worried he would. I wish they had a non-animal version for our room! If you need a humidifier for a child, I highly recommend this product!

What's not to love about this cute cow humidifier? My 18 month old son loves talking to his "friend" in the morning when he wakes. I purchased this humidifier specifically because it is ultrasonic and needs no filter (unlike many of the VICKS brand which we have used in the past) and the cute factor is a bonus. It runs whisper-silent, is easy to refill and adjust the moisture output and clean. Excellent design, excellent product.

I was going to buy the frog cool mist himidifier but I saw they made it in SpongeBob and had to have it. This little cool mister puts out quite a bit of cool mist and keeps the dry winter air inside my home tollerable. The mist is cool & doesn't make the room feel damp, stuffy or smell funny. It will last about 36hrs without refilling, BUT I refill/rinse mine every 24hrs. Other humidifiers I've tried have to be reiflled 3-5 tims a day and don't produce near the results that this one does! I use mine in my family room and kitchen, and it works excellent in smaller rooms. If you have dry skin in the winter like my family does, give this or one of the other cool mist humidifiers a try. You will see a difference in a few short hours. My skin irritation was cut in half from the use of this. I'm getting ready to buy a second one in the frog model for my bedroom.
*The SpongeBob model has a built in soft night light that is adorable! I don't know if the other models have night lights or not.*

06-01-08 UPDATE: An Amazon member asked me where the steam comes out of... on SpongeBob there are two holes on the top of his head that the cool mist shoots out of! It is ADORABLE and would make a CUTE table center piece at a child's birthday party or classroom!
works just great

I'm a college student, and don't have time to maintain it.

This humidifier is easy to use: it does not require a filter, so no soggy gross filter every few month. If you use distilled water, the humidifier will get dirty after, like, a year of use. If you are lazy and use tap water like me, white minerals will form and you should clean it at least every 3-6 month. A toothbrush and a little normal kitchen cleaner is sufficient for this.

The water tank will start to smell after 1.5 yrs of use (if you only leave water in when in use, but do not clean it). Some bleach and vinigar will get rid of it, be sure to use water to get the stuff out before using.

If you are using it for a baby or kid, a cleaning once or twice a month would probably be better. It works best on a hard clean surface, not on carpet (the fan is on the bottom).

It does a good job, is low maintaince, and is cute.
Very cute!

I love my "penelope penguin" humidifier - I purchased her at Target for around $40 bucks and couldn't be happier with my purchase.

I sleep with it on medium setting throughout the night and notice I awake in the mornings with clear sinus, less chest congestion.

It's very easy to maintain and fill, the steam comes out of her beak, which cracks me up because it reminds me of a person smoking or being at the hookah bar.

all in all, i'd recommend this item to others.
it does its job, and its cute to look at, other than those "generic humidifiers"

Great Humidifier! Works great and has lots of settings. The moisture comes out of the top of its eyes and is distributed evenly into the air. I set it on the lower settings and it lasts all night and most of the day. I've used the lowest setting and it lasts an entire day and night.

Penguin a Big Help for Winter Air Issues

Reviewer: Mary, Wisconsin
After quite a bit of research, I picked this humidifier and I am very pleased with it; I bought for my husband and myself, not for a kid. I purchased it to help with dry, indoor air conditions. I try to be a smart shopper and found this item reviewed very positively in Consumer Report and elsewhere. I was concerned about bacterial/microbial growth and the white dust humidifiers often produce, so I also purchased the Crane Demineralization Filter Cartridge for Crane Frog, Cow, Pig, Panda, Penguin and Elephant Cool Mist Humidifiers, and the ProTec PC2 Humidifier Tank Cleaning Cartridge (2 pack) that keep the water clean. The demineralization filter is supposed to last a couple of months, and the drop-in cleaning cartridges last for 30 days. I have also seen these items at Target. After a few months, this humidifier is working beautifully, tank is clean, no white dust. We both have enjoyed the benefits of more humid air in the winter, with both our nasal passages and throats being more comfortable when we wake up in the morning, as well as improvement in painfully dry skin (winter eczema).
The feature that I absolutely love is the adjustable output knob.
It is also quiet enough to run all night.
I also love the playful appearance of the item. It matches our blue and white bedroom.
Fantastic!

We live in the arid conditions of Las Vegas; the winters here are pretty harsh on the system (Low humidity, dust devils, hard water, etc)
DH and I developed dry skin conditions after a couple of winters, so we bought a humidifer from a well known pharmacy out of desperation -bad move- we should have researched it! Non-filter, noisy, left the well known white mineral powder all over the furniture (even with distilled water) not to mention it also left us with an awful smell and taste in our mouths in the morning...Yuck!
DH and I not being fickle purchasers, we really tried to make it work for us, but enough was enough!
So off surfing Amazon I went-I'm a great fan of Amazon and it's users, without their reviews I wouldn't have found this great product!

I bought the Dragon shape, the mist comes out of two slots on top of it's eyes, I use it everynight on mid-high output and so far it's had no problems. It's really cool to look at but more importantly- IT WORKS!
It's not noisy, except for the odd bubble here and there while the water level goes down, you can control the output, the mist is almost invisible
(I still use distilled as we don't have a water softner in the home yet)
No weird taste and our sinus issues are no longer, it's even helped with DH's snoring!

Personally I did't find any cons, the other reviewers who gave it 1 star must have had duds, but c'mon people it's a machine...they're not all going to be perfect and even so- Amazon will replace it with another one! Win-Win!

These Crane ultra sonics are all 1 gallon, when you re-fill it you can't put it on a flat surface because the handle used to lift it out of the base is in the way, but that doesn't phase me,doesn't make me want to give it a negative review - just use common sense and place it on a bunched up towel and hold it with the other hand.

The odd poor review shouldn't give you a bad impression, not all machines are going to suit everyone, but ultimately it's the design you choose which makes it the one for you.

I bought a humidifier at my dermatologist's suggestion since my skin tends to be very dry in the winter time. After an exhaustive search of what was on the market, I decided to go with the Crane penguin humidifier. I wanted something that was fairly inexpensive, small, quiet, something that didn't need to be refilled constantly. This humidifier is all those things and more. The humidifier started working immediately after I turned it on and I can run it for 2 nights without refilling it (I turn the humidifier off when I'm not in the room or at work). This was for my personal use and not for a child or a nursery. I didn't think the design was too childish. It's cute, inconspicuous and works like a charm. I highly recommend it!

This little humidifier does a great job, and it is easy to keep clean. So far I have seen no accumulations or particles and that is great, since humidifier i had prior to this one was impossible to clean, had a filter that was getting dirty way too soon and to top it of, it also was beginning to grow some kind of black mold around the motor.

All you have to do is to empty it, whipe it down and that is pretty much it. Cute design for a child's room, my daughter loves it. The only drawback (at least for me) is that it should plug directly into the outlet (not the extension cord) and it does says so in the instructions. The reason i think is that you have to lift the entire unit to empty the water, since there is a chamber in the base of the humidifier that also fills with water while operating. I did not have an outlet near the place where i planned to place it and had to improvise. Other than that it is good product and so far works great, highly recommend it.

I'm amazed at what a great product this really is. I shopped at Costco a while back and got a honeywell humidifier, only to be disappointed by the filter that wicked the water up, and quickly got clogged by the minerals in the water. I trashed that a while back, and for a while browsed for a good humidifer WITHOUT a filter, and without problems. This one is perfect! The mist it produces is fine enough that anything nearby doesn't get soaked since it evaporates it. The tank is large and lasts a lot longer than the claimed "11 hours" on the box. And the frog just fits in the room, not something that'll go out of style anytime soon like having an Ionic-Breeze might. It's kinda cute and timeless. Love it.

The Crane is an excellent humidifier. I am 69 years old and not embarrassed
to have it in my room. Taking off the head and carrying the unit by the handle is easy.
Turning it upside down and refilling it takes about a minute or so.
Upon refilling it, holding it so one can put the small water lid on is a bit awkward
because of the weight of the water, but it is doable. Carrying it back to the nightstand is easy.
You turn it on, the mist comes out of the mouth immediately and it is quiet as a mouse eating soft cheese. Actually, since I've never heard a mouse eating soft cheese, I would say the humidifier is noiseless.
I recommend it highly.

I did extensive research before I settled to buy this amazing humidifier and I was happy about my decision. This is a wonderfully quite machine and sprays a fine spray of mist all night long and has helped my family a lot from effects of dehydration due to high heat during the night. The feature of an automatic cut-off when it runs out of water also makes me sleep more peacefully. It has multiple humidity settings which vary from 5 to 100% (though not marked on the apparatus). The water mist doesnt collect on the floor, if you keep on a slightly high table from the ground. It's easy to clean but slightly cumbersome to fill-up, but then how easy is it to make something totally PERFECT. I would definitely give 5 stars for this wonderful inexpensive Humidifier.
Worth every penny of the $31.95 we paid

Our child gets nose bleeds when the air in our house is too dry, (mainly in the winter when running the heat) so we try to keep a humidifier in every room.
We especially like how the (dual) mist comes from both ears.
It truly works so much better then a single hole unit like the Elephant or Penguin.
The night light has also been a great feature and makes up for this unit costing more then the other Crane Humidifiers we have bought.
We would recommend this unit as well as the Cat, Cow, Dog & Frog made by Crane.

little elephant works like a charm. so much easier to clean than larger ones that we've spent TONS more purchasing. it's especially economical because it doesn't require you to buy a bajillion replacement filters and attachments. i've owned it now for almost a year, and use it nightly. it's great. we do clean it every other day, and change the water daily... to keep it sanitary. all worth it! only note to add is that it isn't very "durable". i dropped the tank on the bathroom floor once and it now has a crack in the plastic. luckily it's in a spot towards the top where no water rests. but, we also purchased the cow humidifier. i dropped that one too... and it didn't fair well at all. we only owned that one for a week. so, these are great... just don't be as clumsy as me! :o)

I LOVE my Hello Kitty humidifier. (No, I don't have kids. Yes, I'm technically an adult.)

Generally my husband and I try to use it every night, but specifically when one of us is sick. With nightly use, humidifiers help keep your skin moisturized. I keep it on the nightstand by my bed, so the night light is really handy, and looks cool since it lights up the water tank.

The highest setting puts out some SERIOUS steam -- cold, of course -- but so far we haven't had a problem with moisture collecting or mold.

Before Hello Kitty came along, we had purhcased a humidifier at WalMart which was difficult to fill and inconvenient at best. Now filling the water tank is a breeze with the built-in handle (hidden under the removable white kitty head) and it fits perfectly into our bathroom sink.

I should probably go ahead and buy another one so I don't have to share it with future kiddos.

I really like that you can turn on the humidifier and light independently of each other. We are probably just adding fuel to the fire of his choo choo train OBSESSION, but oh well, it's much cuter than the humidifier that we'd bought from the drug store!

We purchased the frog Crane humidifier after having 2 that just wouldn't put out enough mist. We can squeeze this one in the bathroom sink to fill it. It works very well and is cute too. I would imagine that any that are in that shape would work very well.

After my child started liking Sponge Bob, we decided to buy him the Crane Sponge Bob humidifier. It doesn't put out as much mist as the frog, as you can see in the picture I added under images, and we can't fill this one in the bathroom sink. It's no big deal, because we can use the kitchen sink or the bathtub, but in the middle of the night, if you realize it's out of water, it can be a pain. We still love the Sponge Bob one because it is so cute, has the light, and really just looks like decor in my child's room. I would recommend either one, but if your child doesn't care either way, get the frog or one in a similar shape. I hope this helps=)

The mist output is strong so that it can circulate around the room. Just put it on an elevation to get the maximum distance if you want to humidify the whole room.

These are the best humidifiers I've ever come across, and we've gone through PLENTY! Currently, we have the penguin, the cow, and the elephant. All three work splendidly, require almost no maintenance, and bring a comfortable moisture to the air. We live in Denver, Colorado, so our winters are extremely dry and we were dealing with cracked lips and bloody noses quite regularly before we found these gems. I don't have time to deal with cleaning filters and scrubbing hard-to-reach places, and these humidifiers are very easy to wipe down. I love that they don't have filters to replace every month. We use the Crane filter on our penguin, but honestly haven't noticed a difference between the way it works and the way the other ones work - the output is the same. My husband just dropped the tank of the elephant and it broke, so we are in the process of replacing that. However, it's totally worth the cost since we can't really sleep without these now. We've owned them for over a year, and have had absolutely no problems.

Willow has gotten sick on and off since she was born just like everyone does. One time when she was particularly congested we finally got her a humidifier. We opted for the "cool mist" humidifier. After doing a little searching, we settled on this cute frog humidifier by Crane. (They come in a lot of cute designs)

So, why get a humidifier? Well, The National Institutes of Health recommends the use of humidifiers to help relieve congestion from the common cold, flu and sinus infections. Any time you have congestion, a humidifier may be able to help. They add moisture to the air which will in turn moisten your skin (including nasal passages) and thin some of the mucous in your sinuses. This makes it easier for you to breathe and easier for the mucous to drain.

And you know what? It seemed to help her quite a bit.
Love It!

Love this humidifier! I've only had it for 3 weeks, but it works great. I appreciate that it doesn't require a filter and that you can adjust the humidity level. It's also really cute in my baby's nursery. That might be the only drawback - he likes to try to play with it!

Wonderful. Started using it last week. It works, is quiet, has no filters to change, looks cute, - what more could I ask for the price?
Have it by my bed. It does not wet my night table or anything else. It is easy to add water in the bathroom sink. It is easy to wash out. I am not a kid, but I'd rather have this cute spouting elephant that does the job than the laboratory/tech designs that are less effective.
Compared ot the other small humidifiers I have tried it is the best. I dk how long it will last, but for that price I will buy another one if and when it goes.
Wise purchase.

After a bit of research, I decided on a cool-mist ultrasonic humidifier. The price was very competitive for the area of coverage, and heck, the penguin is just cute. I first received a defective product though. The fan would run, but the nebulizer did not emit any mist. I promptly returned it according to Amazon's instructions and received a replacement within a week. The replacement works great, and it was refreshing to find that the process worked in the manner stated.

Update: I bought this cute humidifier and it lasted about 6 months. One day the motor to make the mist just stopped blowing out the mist. For the price I paid for it then was cheap so it served it purpose for it's cost. Remember it only have a one gallon container so you will have to refuel each day.
AWESOME!

I bought the frog humidifier a week ago at Target and I absolutely love it! It has worked perfectly from day one. The other reviewers who had problems with their humidifiers must have had duds. And the one reviewer who said that it didn't change the humidity level in the bedroom must have had a broken humidity gage. I've been using the humidifier in my room for a week now (I placed it on a table, not the floor which I think is key) and, according to my gage, the humidity level has increased every time I have used it. And I only had it cranked up half way! Beware if you do crank it up all the way 'cause it will leave a wet residue on the table and carpet -- it's quite powerful. I'm very pleased with mine and I'm thinking of buying another one!

Pros:
very easy to fill without leaking
very easy to carry when empty and when full
very quiet operation
head is directional

Cons:
one gallon = one night = refilling daily
dial does not have an indicator on it
very quiet operation (I wanted some white noise)

It's cute, it's functional, it works.

I love the Penquin. I need moist air in the bedroom and it does a nice job. I especially like it because the air goes up. I have it located on a dresser a few feet from my bed and it quietly does its work. You can hear a little gurgle sound when water is being exchanged from top to bottom, but not enough to annoy me or wake me. I have another one in the living room, though the room is really too large for the unit, but I have it near my chair and the area's humidity level does goes up. I had other large room humidifies, but they had filters you have to buy....and the one that did not need new filters, well thank goodness it was warranteed for a year. I had to have FIVE replacements! I got sick of that, and bought another Penguin...and it is being used by an adult, not a child!!!
Cute, spacious, nicely adjustible

OK, the penguin is cute. The head pivots so you can aim the mist; the knob on the front goes from barely-anything-happening to a seriously soggy mist. I never saw any drops condensing onto the floor directly, though after running it for a few days the floor and carpet were damp (a clue that I probably didn't need it turned up that high).

I have it set up on a 26" high table, and except for that one case where I was over-humidifying and got a wet carpet in front of it, it's been fine. Wet carpet is just a sign that you've got it turned up too high or set up too close to the floor. In my case I've got it set up near a space heater, so it's compensating for the drying-out effect of heating chilly air. Having the mist from the humidifier intersect with the breeze from the space heater seems to me to be the ideal setup.

Refilling is easy; the white bottom part is the base and contains the mechanism; the head detaches and the blue and white body is a water tank that you can carry over to the sink with a handle which is in the neck area (covered by the head piece during use). It's a little drippy when you detach it but it's designed so that it'd be difficult to spill the whole contents of the tank by accident.

All in all this is a really nice gizmo and I'm glad I got it. No complaints or issues.
Mr. Penguin Rocks!

My newborn daughter needed more humidity. We, and I mean "I", wasted a lot of money on a filterless, supersonic, 2 gallon contraption that smelled musty in about two weeks. Mr. Penguin is the real deal. Buy the screw in filter (you can get it at Target), fill the reserve (upside down penguin), turn on, and watch with amazement.

It wouldn't hurt if you read the directions, which takes about 63 seconds if you're literate. Make sure to put him somewhere elevated - we have him perched on a dresser. Remember, cool mist will sink, but if you didn't know that...er, maybe you shouldn't have kids in the first place. Hey! Just a suggestion.

I don't know what the other folks are complaining about. I have had the frog humidifier for just over a year and it still works like a charm. I used it all winter here in Minnesota and just took it out of my childrens' room. I always crank it up to the highest level and then back down to just the amount of moisture I want coming out of it. It is not really steam, it's not suppose to be. It is moisture in a vapor form. This humidifier is very quiet and does a great job. Best of all, it doesn't take a filter so you don't have to keep spending money on filters every time you want to use it. I also bought another one for a friend with a new baby at the same time I bought mine, and she hasn't had any problems either.

I was sick of nose bleeds and the dry winter weather last year so I decided to pick up a humidifier. In Poland where I'm from people used to hang ceramic tube shaped dishes on a little wire filled with water on a radiator in each room to help and keep the air moist...over time the water would evaporate and help with any congestion as well as it helped combating the drying heat. I missed that so I was very happy to find this adorable product. It's not as inconspicuous as something serious looking but it's cute and works well! I love the variety of shapes and sizes.

I love cows so that's why I chose this one. It has a gallon capacity and I make sure to fill it with fresh water every single time I use it. I also purchased the demineralization filter just to make sure no mineral gunk builds up. I always let it dry out in the morning after using it and never leave the water sitting in it if it's not in use. Water vapor is absorbed better so it's very important that the water is as pure as possible.

After few uses my nose bleeds stopped and my skin felt better, I have a lot of books in my room so I was cautious not to use it too often, overtime the water vapors can damage wood and paper, so I don't use this daily but it's an amazing product for those who have asthma or allergies or are sick with flu and colds. My cats would initially investigate it with terrified eyes but pretty soon they figured it's not a new bath system for them and got over their fears. It's easy to control the stream form light to heavy and it emits a soothing sound. Please make sure to follow instruction and keep it in a stable place without any towels or fabrics underneath the machine to keep it running smooth.

Ours has run 12 hours a night for 20 months and counting

We bought the cow version for our kid's room when they were born. 20 months ago. Everynight it is turned on for about 12 hours, then turned off in the morning. It works great and is fairly quiet. The noise it makes is great subtle "white noise" for the kids to sleep to.

I would buy it again, but it's been so durable, I'm not sure when we'd have to!

The downside to it is that the water reservoir is the "head" and you fill it by taking off the head and turning it upside down...but the top of the head is round so you have to place the head upside down in a (flat bottomed) mixing bowl to fill it, or else you have to keep one hand on it and fill it with the other hand.

I have had this cool mist unit working day and night for a week now and it is going strong. Be sure to set the humidifier on a table (NOT on the floor). This one does not leak at all and a fill lasts over a day, depending on your setting. This little dragon is really cute for a kids room. It doesn't need a filter and I have not had any buildup, but water varies and if you do have hard water, you may need a filter.

I was surprised that something shaped like an elephant was actually one of the best humidifiers I've owned. Filling up the tank is enough water to run all night on the high setting. We have had more expensive products that have leaked but this never has.

My son was a premie and we had to use this daily for almost two years. After that we used it in the winter so he wouldn't get nosebleeds at night. We now use it for my toddler. It is still running after five years! The plastic is getting brittle now but we haven't had any problems so far.
It's Cute and Works Great For A Smaller Room. Recommend To Buy A Tear-Drop Shaped For A Larger Room

Review Date: February 10, 2010
Reviewer: Julia G., Washington D.C.
I first purchased a tear drop shaped humidifier (made by the same company) for my bedroom. I loved it so much, I wanted to have another one for my home office, so purchased this one. I knew the amount of output was a little less but it's so cute and also ~$8 cheaper, so I decided to try it.

The difference in between these two are; 1. Output Amount, 2. Run Time, 3. Mist Angle, 4. Materials.

1. Output Amount - This is 0.2 gallons less than tear dropped shape. It's only "0.2 gallons," but I can easily tell the difference. This would be perfect for a smaller room, but diffidently recommend the other unit for a bigger room. I am using this unit in my home office (11 X 13) and the tear dropped shape in bedroom (14 X 23) and both work great. This unit has less output, but using it my office, it still makes the humidity level pretty high. Without running a room heater and the door completely closed, it can get up to mid 60%. It is normally in mid 40% without using this unit and mid 50% with a room heater going.

2. Run Time - Because the amount of mist comes out from this unit is much less than the other, its run time is much longer. I timed it, and ran a little over 16 hours (at the highest setting) that is 6 hours longer than the other unit! I am happy that I don't have to keep adding water so frequently.

3. Mist Angle - I wish penguin's face was a little more upright looking towards the ceiling so the mist will shoot upwards as tear dropped shape one dose nicely. However, this was quickly fixed as I place this unit at a higher place.

4. Materials - Compare to the tear dropped shape, the handle (top of the unit inside penguin's head), water tank and its cap look a little cheaply made, but still works great and there is no leak, so I do not have any problems with it.

After all, I am happy with both units. It really depends on the size of room you are using, how much output you want and how often you want to add water. I also posted a review for tear dropped shape if you are interested in knowing the basic work on this unit.
Adorable and functional.

With a new baby, a humidifier was necessary. With the little froggy, I don't have any archaic appliances messing up the cute factor of the nursery. Easy to fill, lasts for a few days with setting on medium...There is a volume setting (volume of mist, not sound) and it makes very little noise. Did I mention it was cute??

This product I received during my Junior year of College. I needed a humidifier badly. The dorms absolutley suck on my campus and the heat is extremely dry air. So dry that it could potentially kill you while you sleep. Anyways, after reading a lot of reviews on other expensive humidifiers I cam across this one and purchased it. Yes I know its a kids one but it works better than the adult one. I ran it continuously and there is a little noise associated with it but nothing that kept me awake and I am a light sleeper. So I would recommend this product to anyone and you don't have to get the stupid penguin but I liked it. I also liked having it on full blast and letting it blow at my face so I could pretend that I was in in Britney Spears music video.
Love it!

Really works pretty well. Very quiet, increase the humidity in room very fast. I fill the tank every other day. I put it on my desk (1m high) and did not see it wetted the carpet. The only thing is that if you see white dust around, you should buy purified water to use it, but it is not the drawback of this product, it is a common problem for any ultrasonic humidifier, which you have to use if you don't want a noisy coolmist.

We bought the first Crane elephant for our baby's room, and when the cool mist filter humidifier in our bedroom started making weird screech noises, we bought another to replace it a few months later. We've never had any trouble with them and the convenience of no filter requirement is great. I tried to find an ultrasonic humidifier with a more "grown-up" design to go in our bedroom, but they all seemed to be twice the price of the Crane, so since it works great and the price is great, it's elephants all around!

I have two penguin humidifiers which I purchased a couple of months ago. For the money I think these are great and simple to use. I did not have any problems with leakage--the key is to make sure that the top is on securely. Also, some minor dripping is to be expected when you take the penguin body off the base--just carry a washcloth with you--no problem.
Super quiet. I think it is just the right size for a bedroom. Easy to clean and fill. I had tried others (honeywell and vicks) and this is by far my favorite!

This is a great humidifier. The kids absolutely love the animal shapes. I bought the pig and cow at first and our older son asked for his own, so we ordered the penguin also. The output is great! You can easily control how much output, so you can make the room extra moist or just a little. We also bought the Protec drop-in cleaning balls and they seem to work well too (and they are all natural.) They are relatively quiet, making occasional gurgling noises when more water goes into the resevoir. Over all, we really like these and they are safer than the hot steam ones that our kids got burned on.

Purchased the penguin for my son's room and the Hello Kitty for my daughter's room. They both have adjustable misters and are extremely quiet. The Hello Kitty also has a night light which is a nice little bonus. We use a GE reverse osmosis water filtration system for drinking water and to fill the tanks of the humidifiers. This keeps the humidifiers extremely clean with no mineral deposits whatsoever! In fact, we rarely need to clean the humidifiers.

After returning a cheap Target humidifier from Holmes, I decided to spend the extra money on the Crane. It was well worth it. I typically get two to three nights use from one fill-up. The control dial is very sensitive, providing anything from a light mist, to a full blown (cold) steam pipe of vapor. The low water indicator and auto shut-off work perfectly. I have only had the product for about a month, so I cannot speak to the Frog's longevity.

Update Jan 2009. One year on and the Frog is still going strong. I shelved it for the summer (it's humid enough in D.C.) and took it out in November. Still works like a charm and my 2 year old loves it.

My son needed a humidifier for his room and since he is a huge Spongebob fan it seemed logical that this was the one to go with. We already own the Crane Cow and love it. The soothing vapor mist is fun to watch as it streams from the top of Spongebob's head. I was a little concerned about how delicate this machine appeared as his shoes are the switches and he also has a night light function. I am glad to report that I am impressed. The humidifier functions well, provides a great night light, adds to the room decore and is a major conversation piece! So cute and easy to use, I am very glad we purchased this! I do constantly remind my son that is is NOT a toy and is only to be handled by an adult.

I bought this for my teen's bedroom and it was just perfect through winter! She kept it filled and used the filter, so her tech toys weren't powdered. It was very quiet and she was much healthier when the heat was running at night. I just ordered a replacement filter to have on hand for next year, but did have a problem with the filter leaking out some of it's gel when we first got it. Filters are far too expensive at $9 each, but I wouldn't use it without one. The frog did need elevated so we sat him on a small box about 10" high. From reading reviews, it seems the Frog users have had good success while some other animals don't work as well.

Works pretty decent--raised the humidity in my office, and we're breathing a little better, and my hands aren't as dried as they used to be. I go through roughly 1 Penguin body-full of water per work day, when it's turned up to maximum output. It stops on its own when it senses the water level is too low.

Slight gurgling when it's on max, but I don't hear it anymore--I've tuned it out.
