I am very happy with ths product. It not only helps me and my husband breath better but also helps our animals. I have a cat with asthma and he seems to breath better when I have it running.

Haven't quite gotten the hang of this yet. The fan seems to run pretty quickly and actually adds too much coolness to the room in my opinion. Other than that, the unit works well dispensing moisture without a visible mist.

Great Humidifier....

Review Date: November 22, 2006
Reviewer: Emmly, Midwest
I purchased this for my baby's room and because winters are extremely dry in Colorado. It is a lot bigger than I thought - that's not a bad thing. It is extremely easy to use... just fill up and push the on button. The instructions are very simple. One thing I like about it is that it is ultrasonic (it uses a metal diaphragm vibrating at an ultrasonic frequency to create water droplets. It is not loud, and also produces a cool fog.). No extensive cleaning needed, no adding bleach to the water, etc. It does the job great. There is one little thing that bothers me... the on light is green (it turns red if it runs out of water) and it is very bright at night. I like my room to be dark and this tiny light really lights up a room. I did cover it up with some electrical tape and now it doesn't bother me. Other than the light (which was an easy fix), I love this humidifier.
This item is exactly as described....

Reviewer: D. Kane,
My 13 daughter suffers from consistent nosebleeds during the winter months. This cute little humidifier fits conveniently on the corner of her desk. Unlike most humidifiers, it is so quiet that you can't hear it at all. The only way you know it is running is by the cool mist venting from the top. It is also the lowest maintenance humidifier that we've ever owned and better yet, of all the high $$ units I have purchased throughout the years, this one gets the job done and done well!
A gift that was very well received

I purchased this Blue Bear for a baby shower. My two grandson's have this product (different animals). My Son had researched it completely. The recipients were very happy to have the blue bear since their theme was bears. I would definately purchase another.

At the first two days the product worked just fine (misty and quiet). After the second refilling the humidifier started to make noises (a motor like sound the first 10 minutes and heavy drops sound all the time). - So I had to return it.
Secondly, to refill the tank you have to remove it and turn it upside down - Water always get spilled on my carpet during that process.

This thing works great!

I have a 1400 sqft. home and this thing keeps my humidity up to 50% with no problems. Before it was 25%~50%.
I don't know why there is all these negative comments on this unit? It's quiet, I have it by my bedroom door and on low at night it just sounds like a very small fan, like one of those little clip on 4" fans you can get almost anywhere. It makes a little gurgle sound now and then but this does not sound very loud at all.
This unit has the permanent filters, which is awesome. It's so easy to take apart and clean also.
I like this humidifier very much and the blue led light that shines through the tank at night is cool!

I have had this for 2 years. My second home is in the mountains and it is very dry. This is a nice, nearly quiet humidfier. It works well and I have never had the problems the above reviewers have. I would happily buy it again.

I'm pretty shocked to read the other reviews that are negative in regards to this item. I LOVE MINE! It lasts a good long time, over a day for me on a low setting. I put Aromatherapy Oils in mine all the time and boy does this ever make my home smell good. I generally keep it in my living room, but am going to BUY ANOTHER ONE for my bedroom as well. Mostly I like it because it makes everything smell so good and it's very easy to use, there's no filter to bother with, just fill it up in the sink and add some essentials oils to the water and you're gonna have a sweet smelling room!!! I think it's AWESOME! I have a little dog who I've spoiled and he has doggy-puppy pads next to the front door because my dog sometimes gets up earlier than I do and sometimes it makes the carpet smell bad when he misses the puppy pad a little bit, but when I have this Humidifier on with some Essential Oils it covers the stinky smell very well. I just can't say enough about this great humidifier, and Yes, I have purchased other brands and types and they were so cheaply made they broke soon after I bought them, but this one I've had for atleast 2 yrs and it's still going strong. I'd love to have a small one like this if they ever would make one that's battery operated to put in my closet to keep my clothes smelling good and fresh after laundering. It's GREAT!
Great Humidifier

We wanted an easy humidifier to clean. We have horribly hard water. This is a great humidifier and we are very glad to have it here. We are going to be getting a second one for the rest of our house.
Great humidifier that has lasted a long time

Review Date: January 15, 2010
Reviewer: Boiler29,
I purchased this humidifier 5 years ago and it has run every winter from December till March nearly 24 hours a day. I like this unit because it humidifies my bedroom well and is easy to disinfect. I see people complaining about how they have to clean this unit so often.... I can tell you if you're using ANY humidifier for weeks on end without disinfecting you're going to be spreading pathogens. This is not based on hearsay, but from my college education in pathogens. You cant disinfect other humidifiers like you can with this one.

I disinfect this Hunter Humidifier once a day with Peroxide and every once in awhile with Vinegar. It takes ten minutes and I do it while getting ready to go to bed....not a big deal. The vinegar is a weak disinfectant but does remove the scale. I'm in the midwest with hard water. The permawick filter lasted 3 years. The motor just went out after a calculated 3000 hours of use.

I think the reason why so many people have burnt out motors is because they let the unit run dry or dont let the lower resevoir fill completely before turning the unit on to high. Running it dry spins up the fan and probably burns out the motor

Needless to say I will be purchasing another one.
Lasts a long time

Reviewer: EA Blevins,
We keep this on all the time and it works well. The water tank is big enough to last through the night on the low setting, and low setting is a pleasant hum that helps drown out street noise. (Higher settings use water faster and are louder.)

This is definitely a low maintenance item. Every 7 hours or so, it needs to be refilled (for low setting), and it works just as well as it did when we bought it 2 years ago.

We have noticed, as other reviewers have mentioned, that the water in the base does look yellow and disgusting, but we also haven't noticed any problems stemming from not cleaning it out regularly. (No health issues, no smell, etc.) This does not mean none could arise, but we use it constantly and haven't yet had a problem with it.

So having one with a proper filter is better if you care about what the water in the base looks like, but otherwise we have no complaints.
Works, but not very quiet

Review Date: January 20, 2008
Reviewer: Y. Mueller, Wheaton, IL USA
Got this one just 2 days ago. Went through 3/4 of the water tank in a night, but I put it right next to a radiator for maximum evaporation. Seems to work nice, but the fan is pretty noticeable in a quiet bedroom, even at lowest setting. It does move quiet a bit of air though, even at the low setting.
I will keep it and hope the permanent filter holds up. Previously had a Holmes with the paper filters that sit in the water - I would not recommend those... they always mold up FWIW...
Works well

I purchased two of these humidifiers. IT is nice to not have to replace filters however you do have to soak them in quite a bit of vinegar to keep everything clean. Nothing is without work. I do use these every night in my kids rooms and now one of the nightlite bulbs is out. Will have to figure out how to replace that.
Starts great, then declines. I owned (<- past tense) three.

Review Date: September 14, 2007
Reviewer: D. Chapman, Virginia Beach, VA United States
I have had three of these because I got good deals on them; however, I now have none. All have failed.

First of all, my ears ring constantly from exposure to loud noises throughout my life. I welcome the background "white noise" they provided. I also recognize though that they were pretty loud on higher speeds. Low is fine, but it doesn't humidify much. Medium or high both give off substantial noise.

Like others noted, the first thing to go is the night light. It was a very cool light while it worked because it shined through the water tank and gave "wavy" images on the walls. Looking at it gave me the calming feeling like watching a fish tank. They were much less fun without the cool lighted walls and ceilings. It really was pretty cool while it lasted.

The assembly after cleaning is kind of tricky, but it can be done. Depending on your water, the procedure might have to be done often. If you can put in distilled water, I highly recommend it. Much of the decline of mine was due to water deposits. It's easy to soak the screens in vinegar, but a little more difficult for the assembly itself.

As noted above, you cannot soak all of the parts to clean them. The resultant water deposits eventually clog the holes that the water is supposed to fall through. The cool mist is then replaced by random water droplets spraying out of the top. Selecting the "high" setting is then no longer an option. "Medium" still gets the job done but not as well.

The last problems I encountered were the motors binding up. I was able to free them with a little bit of oil. The downside of that is that the "cool mist" smelled like a hobby shop because of the oil. I don't mind the smell of WD40, but I don't imagine I represent a majority on that note.

Conclusion: If I could get a VERY GOOD deal on this item I would buy it again for the noise (which I like) and the lighting provided. If you read this and the price is kind of high, look elsewhere.

I'm so tired of these false advertisements on product packages and commercials. Like the ionic breeze air purifier that claims to be good, but just falls extremely short in all tests. This humidifier is very loud...continuos water gurgle noises are very annoying when trying to sleep. This is caused by the air bubble release in the tank. Like the other reviewers claim; a yellow slime takes no time to form. Night light feature on mine broke after a month or so. I still use this humidifier because i cant afford to spend 40 bucks on another just yet...so until then i'll have to just turn my tv way up to hear over this damn thing. When will these companies make good products and actually listen to reviews like these. The box to this product mentions something to the effect of it having mildew or algae buildup protection...this is a lie. I'll never buy another hunter product again.
Disappointing Brand Name

Reviewer: Action Jackson, Rocklin, CA USA
I saw this humidifier in Wal-Mart; however, the box did not offer enough information. Therefore, I researched it on-line. I liked the filterless system. Many years ago, I purchased a Duracraft humidifier but donated it a couple years later due to the expense of the filter. While I read the numerous reviews, I decided to try this product out of desperation.

Pros: This humidifier separates easily for cleaning and refilling. However, when I went to refill the container, the gasket came loose, but the container did not leak.

Cons: This humidifier noise level kept me awake at night. Also, when the water level drops down, this humidifier gurgles on the medium and high level.

After two days, I returned this humidifier. I am looking at Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier V4500, which claims to be 27% quieter and more expensive.
Not so impressed

Reviewer: Wendy Suzanne,
We purchased one of these humidifiers a few years ago, and thought it worked fairly well. It was definately noisier than other humidifiers, but it had the night light feature and permanent filters that we were looking for in the product. Needless to say we purchased a second one for our other childs room and this one has had all sorts of problems. It is noisier than the first one we purchased even though it claims to be the same decible rating, its' nightlight quit working within 4 months, and it goes through water much faster than our other one. Permanent filters are overrated - they are very hard to clean (as is the whole unit). I say skip this one and find yourself a nice ultrasonic one.
Slimy unit!!!

Review Date: December 8, 2009
Reviewer: L,
I bought this unit last winter (2008). The good thing about it is that it holds a pretty good amount of water--enough to get me through about three nights without having to refill. The awful thing about it is, like others have said, a yellow slime starts to form in the base of the unit. When I pull the water tank out, there is a well beneath it at least one inch deep where water pools and turns slimy. You have to dismantle the ENTIRE unit, which takes some time, to clean it. And if you let it go too long without cleaning, forget it. It's just slimy and smelly and gross. Even after cleaning it, I still felt as if I were breathing toxic mold. So, if you think you can keep up with the cleaning, it's not bad. Otherwise, I'd choose something else.
Okay for the $

I bought this humidifier for a small living room. I love that it is easy to clean, dishwasher safe, and permanent filters. However, this machine is super loud. I have owned many different kinds of humidifiers, and I have to say this one is the loudest (of the wick filtered ones)! We have to keep it on med or low just to hear the TV. Unfortunately, unless it is on high, the humidity doesn't change much. I will replace this one in the near future. For the price, it helps a little bit without too much upkeep.

I just finished dismantling the humidifier to clean it. There was definitely mold. The humidifier isn't bad. In fact, it works just fine. The filter is made of metal, which you can spray off in the sink or soak in water with a little bleach. I'm just disappointed in the false advertising.
Carefree? Try High Maintenance!

Review Date: December 20, 2003
Reviewer: E. Krantz, CT United States
Despite the expense of this item, I bought it because of the brand name I trust and the claims of low maintenance. Boy was I disappointed!

After one day of use, the water in the base was yellow with what appeared to be algae floating with it. I have had to empty out and scrub this unit every day to keep it clean (note that I use only filtered water to begin with!). Plus its awkward design makes it more difficult to clean than the cheaper models!

Also, even on low it is noisier than I expected with what I consider a "harsh" noise, and it doesn't humidify as big of an area as it claims (although it is adequate for a medium size bedroom).

Add to this poor customer service and you have one truly disappointing experience.

big disappointment

Review Date: February 4, 2004
Reviewer: ,
I thought this humidifier sounded perfect--no filters, low noise, yearly cleaning. What a disappointment. It sounds like a constant running faucet and on any setting other than low, it sounds like industrial equipment. After one month, there was slime and mildew all over the inside. I would never recommend it.
Noisy and Still Dry

Review Date: February 10, 2004
Reviewer: , Kingsport, TN United States
The unit makes a very loud, very annoying whiny noise. Even on the lowest fan speed, I can't sleep with it on, and if I am watching tv, I have to turn the tv volume up to hear over it. I have tolerated the noise for a full two days now, and the humidity has only increased 2%. It took about 36 hours to empty its water tank, so it's obviously not very effective at getting the moisture into the air. And as others have indicated, the water in the base of the unit is getting a little grungy looking. One more thing I wish I had considered when shopping for a humidifier, is that some put out warm mist while others put out cold mist. If you are cold natured like me, avoid the cold mist ones! I shiver every time I walk past it. Maybe if you plan to use it in the summer this would be refreshing, but in the winter this is not only unpleasant, but it doesn't make sense to have something that blows cold air into a house you are trying to heat. The one positive thing I can say is that the night light looks pretty cool.
Noisy Fan Plus Loud Vibration

Review Date: January 4, 2004
Reviewer: , Montgomery Village, MD United States
I just got this humidifier yesterday and used it in my bedroom for the first night. I was able to sleep over the sound of the fan, but then at 6:00 AM I started hearing a lot of noise. At first I thought that the neighbors were playing the stereo. Then, I thought that someone was warming up a Harley in the parking lot. It turned out to be the humidifier. It was making a very loud vibration noise, which was even worse in the room below. I put it on a milk crate to get it off the carpet and put some padding underneath it. That helped, but if it doesn't any better in the next few nights, it is going back.

I have the yellow stuff in the water too, but it is just the anti-bacteria coating from the filters so it is not a problem.

Yuk!

Review Date: January 2, 2007
Reviewer: Beth Gardner, Reading, PA
This unit is swampy in a short period of time. It starts with the yellow debris from the filters and quickly grows into orange slime. This happens in about a week. To make the problem worse, this humidifier has parts that cannot be cleaned without taking it apart. I am going to have to throw it away and get another one.
This one's a true DUD

I purchased this humidifier in December. Less than two months later it has stopped working. Dealing with customer support has been a waste of time. They provided some instructions that did not even apply to the model I purchased. Lots of run around in email chains also, appearing that they have techinical support, but when it comes down to it, they'll ask you to lug it back to wherever you purcahsed it. If I could rate it a negative star, on a one to five scale, this one would get a -5 and their customer support a -5. Oh forget the 5 year warranty. With all the run around, I doubt it will be honored.
The worst

Review Date: February 21, 2007
Reviewer: Jane Marsden, Atlanta, GA
Because I have had adult asthma for years, I watch the humidity level in our home during the winter months. I have been from A to Z with various humidifier models over the years. Some lasting many, many years and others working for a season only. This one ranks right up there with one of the worst, if not the worst, model I've ever had the displeasure to own and operate. First it's loud. Plain and simple. But the worst is the cleaning and trying to re assemble...Nothing ever seems to fit properly and it takes me f-o-r-e-v-e-r to perform cleaning maintenance. I'd rather buy filters than go thru what this model requires. Don't buy this ! I absolutly promise you there are far better and less expensive models out there. I'd tell you what I think they are, if I was allowed to.
Very noisy, big and hard to fill! I DO NOT RECOMMEND!

This product was purchased by my husband when we had our daughter. It is hard to fill and the cap is VERY hard to take off. It makes a VERY LOUD GULPING sound all night and doesn't blow out mist..and only works in small enclosed area.
I don't recommend this product. It was expensive compared to other brands that work a lot better!
Don't buy it.

I've had two of these. The first started leaking water after a couple weeks. The leak got bad enough that it would go through a full tank of water in a few hours. Threw that one out. Bought a new one for the following winter. After a day or two, it started puking orange-brown grease inside itself. I cleaned the grease out as best I could, and it worked for another two weeks, before the motor burned out. Just threw that one away, too. Oh, and the treated filter does not mean you don't have to add chemicals to prevent mildew and mineral deposits--you have to do this with every refill or risk getting sick. There must be better humidifiers out there!!!
Failed as a temporary humidifier

Review Date: March 30, 2008
Reviewer: Lauren E. Michaels,
This unit failed after 2 months. My larger Bemis unit had quit after about 10 years in the middle of Wisconsin winter I needed a replacement quick and big box stores typically don't stock humidifiers after fall so of the slim pickings I took this on sale. The permafilter is a lie. It's like any other wicking filter. After two months the filter was as hard as rock or stone and flithy. Instructions said to wash it in vingar but even limeaway couldn't save it. The whole interior of the unit was coated in mineral flake and I had been using softened water. The unit would also randomly pee on the floor and pump water out the side for no apparent reason. Overall, even though I needed a humidifier to stay healthy this was a bad machine and a few weeks after spending hours cleaning it and replacing the filters, its simply quit working except for the nightlight. It's out in the garbage right now and I'm glad to see it gone. If you own this awful thing, I recommend running it only in a tray. It destroyed some of my wood baseboards from the leaking.
DO NOT BUY!!!

Review Date: May 29, 2008
Reviewer: Duke, Central Oregon
I have owned at least 5 humidifiers and I believe this is the worst! The water in the bottom turns yellow and yucky stuff floats in it after one night of running...It's a pain in the rear to clean!!! and doesn't come clean very well at all! And to top it off, I've owned it for 3 months and it sounds like the motor is giving out already...when I put it on high it starts up good and then in a few seconds, it's barely running! And it doesn't feel like it's putting much cool mist out into the air either....Poor choice for a humidifier...don't waste your money!
Dont get it

Review Date: November 22, 2008
Reviewer: A. Macclellan,
I bought this humidifier when i had my baby. It gets moldy, slimy and you have to clean it out after every other use. I also find that it emits a horrible odor as well like mildew if you do not change the water in the bottom tray too often. Dont feel that it is great to have my child breathing this in. GET SOMETHING ELSE.

This humidifier is completly over priced (no matter where you purchase). On the lowest setting, you are supposed to get 24 hours, but you get 12 at best. It's also obnoxiously loud. Yes, it humidifies the room, but there are plently of other humidifers out there that are worth the $ you pay for them. I should have done my research before purchasing this one.
"Carefree"?????

Review Date: May 19, 2009
Reviewer: Bennic, NJ
I bought 2 of these humidifiers less than a year ago without reading the reviews. There's nothing "Carefree" about them...constant cleaning is a must, and I've replaced the 4 filters twice (at $8 each plus shipping...I couldn't find them at any store). Cleaning the filters per the manufacturer's instructions was a pointless waste of time. I have water with slightly high iron content, but I filtered it & still had problems. They were both due for yet another cleaning last night and halfway through I decided I've invested too much time in these "carefree" units and threw them away.
Very Disappointed

I was very disappointed in this product!! I purchased it because of the Hunter name and and the advertised ease of use. However, it is very noisy and after just two months of use began to make a rattling sound. The humidity then seemed to not be working so I exchanged it for another thinking it was defective. The second only worked for 4 days. Then it also made an even louder rattling noise and had minimal humidity. The water was also always green even when using filtered water. It is very difficult to clean. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
it is noisy and it leaks

Review Date: February 28, 2010
Reviewer: Momotarosan,
this is sucks water upwards and if it loses suction somehow the water will spill over the side of the bottom reservoir and damage your flooring. I have wood floor and it has spill over a few times and now my floor is bulged because of this humidifier. It is also very noisy, I have placed it far from my bedroom and shut my bedroom door so as not to disturb my sleep; compare this to the gurgling sound of the steam humidifier I would prefer my noisy steam humidifier. This is by far the worst humidifier I've ever owned.

Wonderful humidifer

Review Date: December 3, 2007
Reviewer: Elena Wise, Chicago, IL, USA
It's not too noisy and it has nice electronic sensor to constantly monitor the moisture level in the room.
The water capacity is quite large and lasts over several days.
Excellent unit.

Reviewer: Dennis S. Holtgrave,
I bought two of these last fall. Both worked great all winter. A little loud if you put fan on high speed but low speed is fine. Humidistat allows you to set humidity level and permits unit to cycle on and off. Cleanup of water tray is easy. Filter cleaning requires something like lime-a-way to flush out deposits (1 to 2 times a year will suffice depending on your water quality). Would buy this unit again.
Great humidifier

This humidifier is awesome. So awesome we bought two. I do not understand the negative reviews. We have had our first one for 5 years and our second for 4 since our first son was born. They work wonderfully and are so easy to clean and refill. Neither of ours is noisy- it is almost like a white noise and it puts us and our son right to sleep. The price seems to have gone up not sure why but it is worth it since you never have to change the filter.
Had it for 2 years, still runs like new

I'm surprised at so many negative reviews. I've had it for 2 years and it still runs like new. I've cleaned it after each winters use. Yes, it is a little loud but my husband snores so I like to use the humidifier on High Speed!

I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT HIGHLY TO ANYONE.
ALL YOU NEED TO CLEAN THE UNIT, ONCE A WEEK, IS VINEGAR AND WATER,AND A SOFT SCRUBBY.
Somewhat Noisy but VERY RELIABLE

This is an excellent machine to have if you don't have a lot of time for fill-ups or cleaning or anything. I've had mine for two years and have done nothing but rinse and fill and it still works wonderfully. The water does not have any odor to it. There has been some buildup on the inside but that can be easily gotten rid of, I just haven't done it (shame on me). I usually soak anything like this in a vinegar bath and after a while it rinses clean. I've seen all the negative feedback, but I was and still am really impressed by this machine, I paid a lot more and I'm thinking of getting another for when this one eventually wears out but its still going strong. A lot of other vaporizers have lasted a year or so and then I throw them out. THIS IS A KEEPER.
LOVED IT!

This humidifier is so loud that I can't help but snooze like a in utero child at a Motlet Crue concert! The gurgling reminds me of my mother's appetite (which I find very comforting).
I can't wait for the motor to burn out so that I can buy another immediately!
Does the job

I've had mine for 3 months. Works fine and does a good job. On low speed it's quiet enough, although I have it in the hallway to humidify a 3 bedroom area. Love the fact that I don't have to replace the wicks ($$$ saver). That's what made me buy this in spite of the other noise complaints I'd seen.

Very easy to fill the tank and the tank is sturdy and easy to carry. No problems with water leakage. Sometimes the gurgling sound as water is being drained is a little annoying, but not overly so.

Overall, I'm satisfied.

Update (1/12/05) Cleaned it last spring easily with vinegar/water as instructed in the manual and packed it away. Got it back out and started using it in December (12/04). Once in awhile it vibrates a little more than I recall last season, but it's still bearable. It's a bummer others have reported problems with this model. I'm satisfied.
Good performance

I am at loss to find why people have given it low marks.
I bought this piece two weeks back. I am very satisfied with it's performace. First I bought Holmes tower hunidifier. Man I coud not sleep for two weeks. I returned it to Home Depot.

Then I bought this and I am so satisfied with this. It is low noise and very efficient. It air fan is strong and it rotates air in the room while it is on.

It does not have ionization feature. I am sure Hunter can give that without much problem.
Works well

I bought this after trying four other humidifiers - all of them soaked the walls or the floor. This one works very well, and the large tank only needs refilling every few nights (I only turn it on at night). I use the low setting as the high setting is a bit loud, but the low setting is as quiet as any other humidifier I tried (I keep it in the hallway outside of the bedroom). Tank is very easy to refill - I like the handle on top to pull tank off, carry it to the sink, then flip it over, fill it, put top back on, flip it back over and carry it to the base and set it in (someone else didn't like this set up, but I don't get why you'd want it any other way). I have an electronic thermostat in the house that also measures humidity and the humidifier definitely raises humidity. Pretty easy to clean - I've had it for three years and it still works great - I bleach vinegar it maybe twice a winter.
Great Humidifier

Really like this unit.Love the fact you can set it to what amount of moisture you want. The night light is good but I really don't use it.It's a little loud in the high mode but other then when I first turn it on,I always run it on low.
Cleaning the unit is easy also.

I have my doubts that the unit can handle 1350 sq. ft. but in the one month of ownership I like the appliance. I don't place it in the bedroom and I think the fan noise is acceptable for a fan driven humidifier. Like not having to buy replacement filters and with our hard water it really loads up in two weeks. I have the time (15-20 minutes)and $1.00 worth of vinager and the filter is ready to go again. Did have a spell a week ago when the motor sounded like a bike with a card flipping on the spokes. Took the motor housing off flipped it around looking and touching and put it back on and no noise. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm happy this humidifier has lasted me more than two years now. I generally don't use it during the summer, but it running pretty continuously through the winter. I have to clean it fairly regularly and it doesn't really get "clean" anymore. It has certainly gotten louder after the first season of use, but I keep it in a different room from where I sleep and turn it to low at night. On last thing, it's just barely powerful enough for one large room, but not the three rooms I try to humidify with it.
Noisy. Can't cover promised square fooage. Otherwise, good.

We bought this Hunter 34357 and had it for a month. Note: Amazon's return policy is incredible. So, read my review with the qualifier that you should probably try it yourself.

Out of the box: All the parts and components arrived intact, and everything worked.

Setup: Easy to set up, instructions were clear, up and running within about 15 mins.

Operation: This humidifer runs using a fan to disperse the moist air. We had this unit in our livingroom, which is about 25' x 15'. From a humidifier standpoint, it covered this room well. However, it couldn't cover an adjoining office or guest bedroom effectively, even though it was rated for 1600 square feet. I would give it an effective coverage of maybe 1/2 that. In addition, the unit fan was noisy. When I say noisy, I mean louder than the microwave in the kitchen. I mean so loud that we had to turn up the TV. In my opinion, too loud.

We returned it and bought an Air-O-Swiss ultrasonic. (Actually, two of them.) We've been happier with those.

I rated this a 3 because of the noise. Based on noise, it's a 2, based on humification capability, I'd give it a 4. 3 seemed appropriate.

Mine lasted about 6 months. Put out about 5 gallons/day in winter. Loud, loud, loud, but beared it since I had already paid for it. I had to snap together the water pump assembly (a fan blade in a housing that pushed the water though a tube) on many occasions. Could not truly fix it since it is made completely of cheap plastic. In the end, the motor burned up and left the house smelling like burnt varnish for 2 days.
What a shame!

I have two of these models. I purchased both December 2004, and one has just died. After checking it with a meter, my husband says it has an open contact somewhere. I am getting another Hunter, but they surely need to direct more attention to the life of the motor and have a better warranty.
It Gurgles

Review Date: October 1, 2005
Reviewer: L. Yoshii,
I actually did not buy this. This model was given to me by Hunter as a replacement when I bought another(smaller)Hunter humidifier that malfunctioned. It was fine the first week or two, and although it wasn't absolutely quiet, the noise to me was bearable. Until it started gurgling. Now everytime I turn it on it has an annoying gurgling sound that does not go away, regardless of high or low setting. Other than that it does it's job and humidifies my room just fine.

Update* I have tossed this humidifier to the trash. After using this for a few months it now started to leak copius amounts of water on my carpet. I do not reccommend this humidifier.
Hunter Care Free, It Died

After two short winter seasons, which included "as perscribed" cleaning practices, the motor died. The warrantee, according to the vendor, is one year so "your out of luck".
Ok, but lacking some features at this price. Durability questions.

Reviewer: M. Russell, Cincinnati, OH USA
I purchased this humidifier as a replacement for a similar model I had been given as a gift. That unit failed after two seasons. First the night light stopped working and then about six months later the fan started cutting in and out then finally stopped. When I opened it up I noticed the night light failed due to the wire simply rusting away. A manufacturing defect with not enough sealant around the wire.

Anyhow, new unit seems to be running ok with main complaint being that the cap on the water tank is hard to seat properly. First few times it leaked a stream of water on to the floor.

My old Hunter version had a sensor that would turn off the fan when the water ran low. This one just keeps running and the fan gets noisier. At this price I think that sensor should still be there.

I have had several Hunter products and they lasted pretty good.
BUT,this one didn't made it for more then FIVE (5) Months.
After checking into repairing it,it would of cost more shipping back in forth..I don't know what Hunter has done but not the same!I guess cut back on quality and charge more like MANY companies these days.
ok, but not great!

It doesn't seem to cover as large an area as stated to start, but was ok. I had it up high on our large mini fridge so the noise wasn't too bad. The "perma wick" or whatever they call it collects calcium or gunk on it easily and is not easy to clean. I used vinegar as the instructions suggested and made it stronger and stronger until it was full strength, soaking it. I tried brushing it and it stuck like glue. We don't have hard water either. I only use it in the winter so it sat during the summer fine. Then when it was time to be used in the fall, it worked for one cycle, filled it again, and when I turned it on the motor wouldn't start. I heard a buzzing like it wanted to start but couldn't and then the buzzing wound down to nothing in a matter of seconds. Doh! It was only used a hand full of months! I used to have the standing credenza by another brand and I'm going back to that, triplets or no triplets in the house! LOL

I purchased this product hoping it would resolve my low humidity in my office. I filled the tank at 6AM this morning before starting work from my home office. At that point in time the humidity in my office was 22%. I checked the humidity at 5PM and it had gone up to 27% and used 95% of the water. I then put a call into the Hunter Service and support to find out how long it should take in a 300 foot office for the humidity to reach 45%. I was amazed when I was told that it would take 2 to 3 weeks to get the humidity to 45%. It goes back tomorrow.

Ours ran for less than a month. The company says it will replace but we have been through this before with another Hunter humidifier. They replaced it and then that one died quickly.
Thinking it was a fluke we tried again with this one, and here we go again! Not only do we have to wait for the replacement to come but we have no confidence that it will last either. I'd rather have my money back.

Bought the unit Oct. 2004 and use it only during the heating season. It needs monthly cleaning with a gallon of vinegar and a soak time of approx. 3 hours. The unit is very noisy and gets noisier by the day. It now makes a ticking noise, which is becoming very loud. It seems as if the unit will self-destruct any day. I called customer svc. and as soon as I mentioned the ticking noise they told me a new humidifier will be sent to me. I need to send the old one back prepaid after receipt of the new one. When I receive the new unit (7 to 10 days) we will see if it is better. Kudos to Hunter for honoring the warranty 2 mos. out of date.
TOO LOUD!

Review Date: January 9, 2004
Reviewer: ,
I agree with the previous review, that this humidifier was fine at first but grew louder by the second week of use. The fan rattles like a garbage disposal. I tried running it only in the daytime but that defeated the purpose since I need it while sleeping.

Went and purchased the Hamilton Beach 05519 from J&R Music World and it is quieter but still also loud. But I'll take a loud HUM over a loud RATTLE any day!

I'm mad that I have to change filters now, but supposedly only every 2 mos. with the Hamilton Beach. I will stay away from all Hunter products in the future because now I've done some research on the Web and it seems that quite a few people are having the same noise problem. There is a defect. Not only that, one model of Hunter's was recalled due to a fire hazard!

This is the third Hunter we've owned (our mistake). All of ours end up spewing water after just a few months and even dump the entire contents onto our floor in the middle of the night. Nice to have to clean up first thing in the morning. We've grown worried that either our floor is going to soon rot out or the thing is going to cause an electrical fire. No thanks on another one. Spend more money for something that WORKS.

LOUD

Review Date: January 4, 2004

although this unit kept the room at a constant set humidity, it grew noisier each day I had it. By the seventh day it sounded like the fan was so loose it would detach and fly spinning into the room. I bought two units at the same time, and both had the same problem, so I don't think this was a defect. Guests that came over thought I had a space heater in the room making the noise--they couldn't believe it was the humidifier. I had forgotten how peaceful the house was without them (and I live in manhattan).
Say it ain't so

Review Date: January 14, 2007
Reviewer: Evan,
As a contractor who uses Hunter ceiling fans and Quiet-Flo purifiers in the new homes that we build, the next step was to start trying out the Hunter care-free humidifiers in the houses we build in desert areas, Arizona/So Cal mostly.

The first model we tried was a space-saver version that was taller, had two resoivors and a pump section. First, that one was too big, though it was taller than wide, I would imagine the mostly elderly people that live in the desert areas wouldn't enjoy picking up a 2+ gallon tank of water and sitting it on top of a 3 foot high or so stand, that would be sitting on top of a table.

The good thing, when we hooked the first one up, it made a noise that sounded like a chainsaw that had encountered a piece of steel and just died right there. First time ever turning it on and the motor was gone.

So, this 33257 was the one we picked up upon returning the other one. I don't know about you all, but I want to see something coming out of the machine. Instead, I see nothing except the water disappearing from the tank and I hear plenty.

The crew that I was working with had a good laugh when we first hooked this unit up. One of the guys was outside the room we were in and yelled, "What are you all cooking? Where did you all get a microwave?" Yeah, leave it to a bunch of men in the desert to think one of us snuck a microwave in to cook with. I walked into the other room where he was and sure enough, it sounded like a microwave running in the next room.

As a loyal Hunter customer, I wanted to give the humidifier the benefit of a doubt and tried the lower speed setting. Now, I could barely hear it and could barely feel any air coming from it.

On the positive side, they at least made this one easy to fill, which is important since we ran it on high for around 12 hours and it was needing filled already.

Overall, I wouldn't rate it above a 3 at tops at anything that it is supposed to do. Their Quiet-Flo purifiers are great for the price, so it really shocks me that these humidifiers are so bad.

I guess the permanent filter is a plus, but on the other hand, I have a hard time believing that the filter will last forever, which is what the box claims, "Filter NEVER needs replacing". I've worked in construction as a construction engineer for around 15 years now and figured out a long time ago that never never means never!

A very disappointing product from a company that I will still trust with ceiling fans and purifiers, but no more of these humidifiers. Terrible.

On a side note, since I usually buy these products for my own home after seeing how they work in the ones we build, it is kind of like using other homes as guinea pigs! Hey, not to worry, no one usually moves into them until a year after they are finished.

The model humidifier that we are now using is the Air-O-Swiss that is $139.99. It does have a little cartridge that you have to replace every 3-4 months as well, but it seems to do the trick when it comes to keeping the air moist.

The only real problems that I personally have that a humidifier would help is dry skin (In the sun all day)and occasional bloody nose (breathing moisture-less air and sawdust)I've only had the Air-O-Swiss for about a month in my house, so I can't say that it is going to be that great, but so far I haven't had any bloody noses since using it. This used to a be a once a week or once every two weeks problem.

Maybe Hunter will read these reviews which sound like to be from customers like myself who KNOW that Hunter is a very good company when it comes to home products to help us breath better and improve air quality around us. One last interesting part. I called the number I have for Hunter as a contractor who was thinking of buying a bulk amount of these. They returned my call within 10 minutes. After explaining that I would be putting these in homes of elderly, some disabled as well, the person I spoke with said that they maybe hadn't perfected humidifiers yet.

Which if nothing else, at least lets me know that Hunter has a little conscious. Hopefully, they will go back and start over with some knowledge of past mistakes with this 33257 model being eliminated.

We bought 3 of these last winter and put one into operation. Within 2 months, the motor died. We called Hunter who sent us a brand new machine. I was encouraged by the good service, but in retrospect, they probably knew they had a product quality issue. This winter we've put the other 2 + the replacement into operation. 2 have died after less than 2 month's usage. I'm expecting the last one to die any minute now. Don't waste your money on Hunter!!

That is the only word to describe this product. On high it is way to noisy and even running this on high constantly, it does not do a very good job. The only reason I bought this product was that it was the only one I could find when my other humidifier broke. I am going to purchase another one so I can get rid of this. What a waste of money. I would not even take this if it was given to me.

I bought two humidifiers, the 3 gallon, and the 2.5 gallon, and within a month, both of them quit, the motors burned up. Upon notifying Hunter, I was sent two replacements immediately. One of them is already making a loud noise, and I expect the other to quit anytime. I would spend a little more money and buy a better humidifier because each time you send it back, you have to pay shipping which isn't cheap.

Please think twice before purchasing one of these "Care-Free" humidifiers for your home. The concept of the machine is great however after having 3 of them and having all 3 of the motors "burn out" I will never buy a Hunter product again. The last one I got lasted only 2 months before it died. I am just thankful I was home every time that this happened and I was able to quickly unplug them.

A total waste of money and Hunter's customer service department is the worst! Never again for me...

Last year I got this humidifier because I was tired of paying for a new filter every month or two. It seemed to work fine for that season. This fall I set it up, turned it on, and nothing happened. After going through troubleshooting with Hunter they determined that the motor burned out (apparently a common problem with these if you read over the rest of the reviews). Since it was still under warranty they said they would send another one out free of charge and it should arrive in 7-14 days.

That was 2 months ago and still no unit!!!!

I have called them back several times and each time they look it up, say "oh, it must have gotten lost," and enter a new replacement order. I now have three different reference numbers, and neither of them has resulted in the replacement unit they promised. Stay away!!!!

I have been a fan of Hunter Fans for a long time, and have reliable Hunter Fans throughout my house. Hunter humidifiers are, however, extremely disappointing. I have had two models of this same humidifier over two seasons. Each humidifier lasted exactly one season. It's been a warm winter here in Maryland until now, and I just filled up the humidifier for the first time this season. Just like the last one I owned, no power, no niteglo, no humidistat.

Like I said, I'm a fan of Hunter (no pun intended!), so I gave Hunter the benefit of the doubt on the first humidifier. However, two bad humidifiers with the exact same problem is an indication of an unreliable product.
